Paper-Based Blood Test Gives Results in Seconds

Mar-20-17
A new blood test able to identify blood types in seconds could help speed treatment during emergencies.

The test, developed by a team from the Third Military Medical University in China, is based on the knowledge that blood antibodies will attack antigens from foreign red blood cells.

The paper-based test relies on antibodies and dye, which are embedded in a paper strip. When the sample of blood is placed on the strip, the antibodies in the strip will react with the antigens in the red blood cells as the blood flows over the different sections. If the antigen A, B or D is present, a colored square will appear, indicating the blood type. A brown square will appear is an antigen is not detected. The test takes about thirty seconds to complete, and was proven to be more than 99.9 percent accurate in human blood trials.
