Paper from Sugar Cane

Paper from Sugar Cane
Mar-08-09
A way to make paper from sugar cane has been developed and made economically viable.

Sugar cane is an extremely valuable resource in the face of today's energy situation. About 195 countries grow it and send more than a million tons to market. It can give us fuel to drive our vehicles and, now, it can save our trees by giving us paper.

Technical barriers have recently been overcome so that bagase, the fiber remaining after the the sugar-bearing juice has been extracted from sugar cane, can now be processed economically and used as pulp in the production of paper, rather then being discarded as production waste.
