A paper-based machine able to perform DNA testing to detect diseases could bring the valuable technology to even the most remote areas of the world.
Referred to as the “Paper Machine,” the microfluidic device combines the sample preparation, DNA analysis, and detection steps into one machine, and can be used with little training. The test costs only about $2 to produce, yet was able to identify the tiny amount of E. coli planted in the test samples. The test results can be read under ultraviolet light using a smartphone camera, and the development team is currently working on ways to simplify the process even further.
