Penumbra Shading System Opens Out to Create Deep Shade

Mar-12-14 The Penumbra kinetic shading system concept features sun shades that rotate in three directions, offering better sun protection as the sun moves across the sky.

The system, designed by Tyler Short, consists of louvers that can tilt horizontally and vertically to provide shade as the sun moves east to west. Besides simply pivoting in two directions, the louvers can also be rotated upwards to form a “horizontal shading element and light shelf.” This upward rotation enables light to permeate the building while still blocking direct sunlight. This concept is demonstrated in Short’s 3D video of the concept blinds.
