Scientists have discovered that a drug which is used to treat drug and alcohol addiction can help kleptomaniacs from stealing.

The drug, naltrexone, works by removing the "thrill" that the shoplifter experiences when stealing. This considerably reduces the cumpulsion to steal. Dr Jon Grant, of the University of Minnesota led the study and said that "The difference in their behavior was significant" when prolific shoplifters took the drug.

The drug works by blocking nerve interactions in the brain that create feelings of pleasure. It is sold under the brand names Revia and Depade and is used mainly as a drug to help alleviate alcohol and opiate abuse.
