PipeGuard Robot Detects Leaks Far Underground

PipeGuard Robot Detects Leaks Far Underground
Jul-20-17
The PipeGuard robot from MIT will swim through urban water pipes to detect leaks far below ground.

The robot is made up of a rubber body with a soft rubber ‘skirt’ attached that can expand to fill the pipe’s diameter. As it travels through the pipe, the bot can detect the pressure variations that indicate a leak and note where the variation occurred, collecting the data in an internal log that can be accessed when the bot is collected at the end of its journey.
