Polaris-H Lets Users See Radiation

Polaris-H Lets Users See Radiation
Mar-19-14
The Polaris-H detector handheld radiation camera offers a cheaper, faster method of checking for radiation in real time.

Modern radiation-detecting equipment is bulky, slow, and extremely expensive, and needs to be cryogenically cooled. In contrast, the Polaris-detector, designed by a team from the University of Michigan, is equipped with a cadmium-zinc-tellurium, room-temperature gamma ray detector. The lightweight detector is remarkably accurate, and is able to lay a gamma-ray map over the image of an area, allowing the user to ‘see’ the radiation and pinpoint the sources of leaks or trouble spots.

The device works in real time and, according to H3D president William Kaye, can detect specific areas of radiation as well as which areas have the most concentrated amounts.
