Portable Blood Filtering Device

Portable Blood Filtering Device
Sep-19-15
Researchers have created a portable device for clearing pathogens from blood, offering a faster and more efficient treatment for sepsis.

The device, developed by a team from Harvard, is equipped with channels of fibers coated with an engineered blood protein that will bind to almost 100 types of harmful organisms, as well as the toxins secreted by some bacteria. As the blood flows through the machine, the fibers attract the pathogens and toxins, allowing the filtered blood to be returned to the body. According to the team, the device can filter all the blood in a person’s body in just 30 minutes, with multiple cleaning rounds requiring a few hours.

The team hopes to move into human trials soon.
