Researchers have created portable microfluidic device that could make it easier to diagnose diseases in remote areas and developing countries.
The device, which has already been proven to successfully identify Ebola, takes advantage of the improvements in microfluidic technologies. Created by the team from EPFL, the compact and portable device can identify up to 16 different biomarkers using just a small sample of blood. The device stands out from its counterparts in that it is equipped with both digital and analog detection mechanisms, which allows it to detect biomarkers in both high and low concentrations. And as an added bonus, and the blood sample does not have to treated before use.
