Portable mobileVision Device Simplifies Eye Exams

Portable mobileVision Device Simplifies Eye Exams
Mar-25-15
The prototype mobileVision device lets users examine their own retinas from a remote location, and could be particularly useful in developing nations.

Developed by a team at Rice University as part of their Scalable Health Initiative, the device is meant to take the place of the large and expensive equipment normally required to obtain an image of the macula, and can be operated with very little training.

When the patient looks into the eyepiece of the mobileVision, they see a red disk that will change appearance as the device shifts around. When the eye is perfectly aligned, the disk will appear extremely bright and uniform, at which time the patient will press a button and move the disk out of the way, exposing the camera. Since the patient's pupil will already be dilated from looking at the dark target, no dilation eye drops are required. The images are then sent to a specialist for interpretation.
