PosturAroma Necklace Uses Scents to Keep Women Safer

PosturAroma Necklace Uses Scents to Keep Women Safer
Mar-01-14
In an effort to convince women to show more confidence and thus be safer in public spaces, the PosturAroma necklace will release a safety-invoking smell when it detects the wearing is slouching.

Designed by a team of students from the University of Amsterdam, the idea behind the PosturAroma was based on research that suggests criminals look for distracted and vulnerable victims who look down or slouch while they walk. Equipped with a triple axis accelerometer device near the clasp, the necklace is able to detect movement as well as the angle of the wearer’s back. If the sensor detects too much slouch, it will release the aroma of lemongrass, strawberry or mandarin peel—scents that are associated with feelings of safety.
