PredictAD Could Lead to Earlier Alzheimer's Treatments
Dec-26-12
The PredictAD software could help diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages, contributing to more effective treatments and possibly slowing the progression of the disease.

Developed by teams at the VTT Technical Research Centre and the Imperial College London, the system compares the records of the patient in question with the large database of other patient records, and then creates an index and graph illustrating the status of the patient. In a study of the software using the database of records of 288 patients compiled by the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the team found that 140 of the patients were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease an average of 21 months after the initial measurements.

Because the accuracy of the predictions was comparable to clinical diagnosis, the researchers concluded that half of the patients could have been diagnosed with the disease around a year earlier, allowing for earlier treatment.
