The startup Prieto Battery has developed what is being called the first “true” 3D battery able to perform the same basic functions as a conventional battery.
The battery is made from an extremely porous foam with an enormous surface area, which increases energy density and power. After the foam has been coated with the anode, a layer of polymer electrolyte creates a barrier that the ions can move across, followed by the cathode—which is applied as a dark slurry. The result is a foam battery about as thick as a piece of paper and two inches in width able to charge quickly and store more energy, and without the risk of overheating.
