Project Mudra Provides Affordable Braille-Learning System

Project Mudra Provides Affordable Braille-Learning System
May-12-14
Built by a pair of students, the Braille 'dicta-teacher' Project Mudra was created to help address the high levels of illiteracy among India's visually impaired.

Conventional Braille displays cost about $4000 each, which is not an option for most people in developing areas. To provide a more reasonable alternative, computer science students from BITS Pilani's Goa campus used a Raspberry Pi micro-computer to create a simple Braille display. The palm-sized device is equipped with six pegs, controlled by the Raspberry Pi, that will move up in down in response to the word or character read through aloud. The system is significantly more affordable than current devices, and could be made available for only $150 each.

Although there are many Braille resources for the visually impaired, resources to actually teach a person Braille are in shorter supply.
