Proximity Hat Warns of Obstacles with Gentle Pressure

Proximity Hat Warns of Obstacles with Gentle Pressure
Jan-28-16
The Proximity Hat guides the wearer and warns them of obstacles with gentle pressure on the head.

Developed by a team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the current prototype consists of a headband that has been embedded with six ultrasonic sensors. As each sensor scans the immediate area horizontally and in all directions, a flexible pad will press against the wearer’s head to indicate the direction of the obstacle. The harder the pad presses, the closer the obstacle, allowing the user to navigate the area hands-free.

Besides its obvious applications in assisting the visually impaired, the system could also find its way into firefighting operations and could even be used to detect areas of high pollution.
