The PupilScreen smartphone app can be used on the field to detect concussions quickly and effectively.
Developed by a team from the University of Washington, the PupilScreen app works with the smartphone’s camera to detect changes in pupillary light reflex of the subject’s eye. After the phone’s flash stimulates the eye, the camera captures a three-second video of the pupil’s response, which is then analyzed by the system’s algorithm to track changes in pupil size.
In tests on human subjects, the PupilScreen was able to diagnose brain injuries with an accuracy almost as good as a standard hospital pupilometer.
