Push-Button Test for Parkinson's Disease

Push-Button Test for Parkinson's Disease
Dec-26-19
An innovative new method of testing for Parkinson’s disease replaces extensive physical effort with a few button presses.

Typically, people with Parkinson’s are diagnosed via gait studies, which require the patient to walk a considerable distance and can cause discomfort.

As a better solution, an international team of researchers developed a system that relies on measuring keystroke time series. Patients are asked to press a button on a smartphone as quickly as possible for a short amount of time, with that information then analyzed using fuzzy recurrent points translated into grey-scale images. By analyzing the difference in the time series between people with early-stage Parkinson’s and healthy individuals, the team hopes to create a faster and less stressful early detection method.
