The wearable Q system allows the hearing impaired to “feel” sounds that they might otherwise miss.
While there are already several apps and devices available that translate speech to text for the hearing impaired, the Q system takes things a bit farther by incorporating tactile stimulus, as well as a few other benefits. The system (which is still in the concept phase) features a band worn on the hand and a microphone that attaches to the user’s clothing. The microphone captures the speaker’s voice, which is transmitted via Bluetooth to the band and translated into text that will display on the band’s OLED screen.
But beyond simply displaying the speaker’s works, the Q system can also record a transcript of the conversation, represent the speaker’s emotional tone in a fluid graph (Emotiocaptioning), represent possible missed sounds via four pressure points (Touch Speech), and allow the user to bookmark areas of the conversation to come back to later (Bookmarking).
