Quad-Morphing Drone Slips Through Gaps

Quad-Morphing Drone Slips Through Gaps
Jun-04-18
An innovative quadcopter able to change shape in flight can squeeze through tight spaces where other drones may not fit.

Developed by a team at the Étienne Jules Marey Institute of Movement Sciences, the drone features a pair of horizontal arms with propellers on either end. Through a system of cables, the drone is able to adjust the arms in flight, moving them parallel to its axis to cut its wingspan in half. Once the drone has traveled through the gap, the arms open out again and it can resume normal flight.
