A new device developed to streamline the process of tracheotomies could find its way to public spaces in much the same way as defibrillators.
The concept device consists of a cylindrical-shaped body equipped with a sheathed breathing tube. The front of the tube holds a spring-loaded cannula and a fiber optic camera lens, which are placed in location on the patient’s trachea and secured with a curved brace. The preload of the cannula’s spring can be adjusted as needed, and the tube can be guided into position by viewing the camera’s images on a top-mounted display.
The device is intended for use during planned tracheotomies as well as emergency situations (providing a more reliable but less dramatic alternative to the ‘Bic-pen’ method seen so often in drama shows.)
