Respiratory Sounds Visualizer Listens for Lung Disorders

Respiratory Sounds Visualizer Listens for Lung Disorders
Feb-25-16
The audio-based system Respiratory Sounds Visualizer is able to “listen” for sounds of respiratory problems, making it easier for physicians to diagnose pneumonia and lung conditions.

While most doctors still listen to a patient’s breathing as part of their diagnostic routine, that method is a bit open to personal interpretation, and can even be hindered by other noises in the room.

To take some of the guesswork out of the procedure, teams from Fukushima Medical University and the Pioneer Corporation collaborated to create the Respiratory Sounds Visualizer. The software-based system relies on a mathematical formula derived from the breathing sounds of more than 800 patients with respiratory disorders. By comparing the patient’s breathing sounds to the ones in the database, the system is able to identify the patient’s respiratory condition, even if multiple disorders are at work at the same time.
