An extremely efficient, reusable sponge able to quickly absorb oil from wastewater could help greatly reduce the pollution from offshore drilling.
Developed by teams from the University of Toronto and Imperial College London, the sponge is an improvement over an earlier, slower-acting version that required a specific pH range. In order to make the sponge filter more commercially viable, the team coated the material with nanocrystalline silicon particles, which allows the sponge to capture 90 percent of oil droplets from wastewater within ten minutes. The oil, which is captured via adsorption, can then be removed and the sponge reused.
