Reverse Photosynthesis to Convert Biomass to Fuel

Reverse Photosynthesis to Convert Biomass to Fuel
Apr-05-16
Researchers have discovered a “reverse photosynthesis” process that could be used to efficiently convert biomass to usable fuel.

The process, developed by a team from the University of Copenhagen, can be used to convert biomass to fuel using natural sunlight and an enzyme called lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase. When the enzyme is mixed into a biomass with chlorophyll and then exposed to sunlight, the sugar molecules break down, leaving behind biochemicals that are easier to convert into plastics and fuel.

According to the team, the reaction process can be shortened from the conventional 24 hours to just ten minutes.
