Robots in Pain Could Help Train Doctors

Robots in Pain Could Help Train Doctors
Apr-13-15
Robots able to simulate human expressions could provide more in-depth training to interns than today's eternally stoic versions.

While "human patient simulators" are useful training tools for young doctors, they don't teach the student to recognize and respond to human expressions that could also aid in diagnosis. And this lack of experience can lead to unnecessary deaths.

To bridge this gap, a team from Notre Dame University is working to introduce a facial simulator onto the training robots. For the first stage of the project, video scans of people in pain were mapped onto a physical robot equipped with a facial system able to mimic many expressions. The team next hopes to create a facial template that will allow clinicians to recognize stroke victims.
