Sacrificial devices embedded in key structural areas could reduce damage to buildings during—and after—earthquakes.
The system was devised by a team from Heriot-Watt University to help minimize the damage, particularly residual drift, that can occur even after a building has stopped shaking. According to assistant professor Dr. George Vasdravellis, computer simulations have shown that if properly placed, the ‘sacrificial structures’ could bear the brunt of the damage, and simply be replaced if necessary without needing to demolish the whole building.
The sacrificial system could be installed in existing buildings, and could also help protect structures from explosions and other sorts of attacks.
