Safe@home Detects Falls and Calls for Help

Safe@home Detects Falls and Calls for Help
Feb-14-14
Developed to make living alone safer for seniors, the safe@home system will automatically initiate an alert protocol if it senses the user has fallen and is unable to get up.

While other fall-alert systems rely on false alarm-prone body sensors or on the ability of the user to manually trigger a device, the safe@home system is fully automatic and more reliable. The system is made up of a network of sensor boxed mounted on the ceiling that are able to detect motion and sound. If the sensors detect the signs that a fall has occurred, such as cries for help or no motion or sound for a particular period of time, the home alarm unit (the CareBox) will call for help, first by phoning the home’s occupant. That allows the occupant to cancel the alarm, if necessary, before the unit begins the process of calling designated emergency contacts.

The units have been undergoing testing since 2012, and are expected to be commercially available by the end of this year.
