Saildrones Gather Ocean Information

Saildrones Gather Ocean Information
Feb-06-18
A fleet of autonomous Saildrones will soon be gathering information about conditions in the Southern Ocean.

Created by the San Francisco startup of the same name, the wind-powered Saildrones will be used by the Australian research group CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) to measure marine and atmospheric conditions as well as ocean carbon and water column biomass. The onboard electronics are solar powered, allowing the Saildrones to explore remote areas of the ocean for up to a year, avoiding ships and other obstacles as they transmit their data to the research team in real-time.
