Self-Assembling Millobots Form Into a Gun to Fight Disease

Self-Assembling Millobots Form Into a Gun to Fight Disease
Jul-03-15
Offering a new way to “target” drug treatment, researchers have created millirobots able to self-assemble into an electromagnetic gun once inside a patient’s bloodstream.

The magnetic milliobots would be guided to specific locations using an MRI device, where they will then arrange themselves into a Gauss gun—a sort of magnetic accelerator. The bots would be sent in sequence, with a special “trigger millirobot” sent last. When this trigger bot comes in contact with the rest of the arrangement (a needle-bearing millobot sits at the front), it will cause the gun to fire, sending its payload of drugs into the target area.
