Self-Cleaning Textiles Activated by Light

Self-Cleaning Textiles Activated by Light
Mar-26-16
Using nanotechnology, researchers at RMIT have created self-cleaning textiles that will degrade organic matter when exposed to light.

The textiles were developed by dipping the fabrics into different copper- and silver-based nanoparticle solutions. This method allowed the nanostructures to grow directly on the fabrics, with a stable nanostructure forming in thirty minutes. When the treated textiles are exposed to light, the nanostructures create “hot electrons” that are able to break down organic matter.

The team is currently working on testing the technology on different stains, and determining the most efficient amount to use.
