Self-Healing Concrete Powered by Fungus

Self-Healing Concrete Powered by Fungus
Jan-19-18
A new self-healing concrete fills its cracks with fungus.

Developed by teams from Binghamton and Rutgers Universities, the technology was inspired by the body’s own self-healing abilities, and relies on the spores of the Trichoderma reesei fungus. The spores are mixed into the concrete, along with nutrients, as the material is being produced, where they remain dormant until tiny cracks form that let in water and oxygen. This triggers the spores to grow, producing calcium carbonate that fills the cracks before they can expand further.
