An innovative new self-sealing needle could help reduce the dangers of injections for patients with hemophilia.
Developed by a team of researchers from Korea, the self-sealing needle is coated with a thin, biodegradable polymer derived from chitosan. When the material makes contact with the blood inside the body, it will shift from a solid to a gel to close off the injection site and stop the bleeding.
In tests on mice with hemophilia, the mice injected with the modified needles showed a 100 percent survival rate, whereas the mice treated with normal needles all died.
