Sensor Badge Sends Smartphone Alerts of Toxic Gas

Sensor Badge Sends Smartphone Alerts of Toxic Gas
Jul-14-16
A small wireless sensor badge the size of a credit card can alert the wearer to toxic gasses.

In development by a team from MIT, the sensor differs from current options in that it is lightweight and wearable—qualities sorely lacking in today’s gas sensors. Weighing less than a piece of paper, the sensor will be equipped with carbon nanotubes encased in a polymer. The polymer will break down in the presence of toxic gasses, causing the nanotubes to become conductive and send a signal to an NFC enabled device (such as a smartphone). No internet connection is required, and the sensors are estimated to cost only about five cents to make.
