Sensor Shoes Track Firefighters' Location

Sensor Shoes Track Firefighters' Location
Jan-20-14
Sensor-equipped shoes that can track a firefighter’s location in areas where GPS cannot function could help commanders warn their teams of dangerous areas or guide them safety.

The system is made up of a processor and a selection of sensors, including a gyroscope and accelerometer, and was developed to withstand extremely high temperatures and shock. It fits into the heel of the boot and transmits the location information to operational command via a wireless module worn on the firefighter’s shoulder. The system has been successfully tested in real time, and remained functional even 82 feet below the ground.

The research team is now working to embed the sensors in the sole and develop a way for the sole to generate its own power supply. The ultimate goal is to create a sensor sole thin enough to be worn in regular shoes.
