Silver Layer Prevents Windshield Icing

Silver Layer Prevents Windshield Icing
Jan-29-17
A new silver-embedded windshield design from Volkswagen keeps the glass free of ice without filament wires.

While heated windshields are not a new invention, they typically require fine filaments to be embedded in the glass, which can become visible in certain light. In order to keep their windows completely clear, the Volkswagen team replaced the wires with a thin, electrically conductive silver layer. The layer consumes only about 500 watts, and warms quickly to defrost ice and snow while also reflecting up to 60 percent of infrared light—keeping the car’s interior cooler in summer.
