SLUGs Keep Airplane Wings Free of Ice

SLUGs Keep Airplane Wings Free of Ice
Mar-23-16
Joining the array of de-icing technologies, the SLUG coating will secrete a slippery material to help keep ice from sticking to airplane wings.

The coating actually belongs to a group of coatings, called self-lubricating organogels (SLUGs), which consist of a gel and hydrophobic substance contained in a silicon resin. Once cured and applied to the surface as a film, the material will secrete its ultra-slippery substance that prevents ice from sticking to it. When the temperature rises again, the repellent substance will be absorbed back into the film.

According to the team, the SLUG material could also be used to create antifouling surfaces for metal molds, packaging and ship bottoms.
