Smart Bricks Create Living Walls

Smart Bricks Create Living Walls
Jul-31-16
Smart bricks able to generate energy from sunlight and recycle wastewater could allow buildings to function like “living organisms.”

A team from the University of the West of England created the bricks by embedding microbial fuel cells (MFCs) into the bricks themselves. The microbes have been specifically chosen based on their ability to clean water, reclaim phosphate, facilitate detergent production, and generate electricity, resulting in a wall of smart bricks able to sense and respond to their surroundings in a coordinated way to produce useful resources.

The smart bricks are a part of the larger Living Architecture project (LIAR), which is seeking ways to find global sustainability.
