Researchers have developed a commercially viable smart fabric embedded with microchannels that transport liquids to help keep the wearer cool—a bit like wearable air conditioning.
Created by a team from the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), the fabric is embedded with an array of microchannels through which both hot and cold liquids can be pumped. Although such materials have been developed before, the new technology from the team at VTT allows the channels to be quickly embedded in a large piece of plastic film. Beyond clothing, the technology could have applications in storage and transport of temperature sensitive items.
The team next plans to create an app allows the smart fabric to be controlled with a mobile device.
