Oxford University's smart glasses for people with limited vision are undergoing their first human trials in public spaces.
The glasses are made up of a frame-mounted video camera, a pocket-sized computer processing module, and software that will project the images of nearby objects onto the glasses' transparent, electronic displays that stand in place of conventional lenses. The images are delivered as a high-contrast outline, making it much easier for people with limited vision to interpret their surroundings.
Although the smart glasses are currently a bit bulky, the team has plans to make the device look more normal, and may eventually add audio and text features. However, the current focus is on making the glasses small and affordable—about the cost of a standard smartphone.
