Smart Scalpel Detects Cancerous Tissue

Smart Scalpel Detects Cancerous Tissue
Apr-14-16
A smart scalpel able to tell healthy tissue from tumorous in real time could lead to quicker and more successful brain surgeries.

Created by David Oliva at the Free University of Brussels, the tip of the device is equipped with actuators that generate vibrations when the scalpel touches brain tissue. As the vibrations move through the tissue, the smart scalpel uses them to interpret the properties of the tissue and determine if it is healthy or tumorous. Visual and audio cues will keep the surgeon informed as to the health of the tissue.
