SmartFin Gathers Data as Surfers Play

SmartFin Gathers Data as Surfers Play
Dec-27-15
The SmartFin lets surfers ride the waves while also gathering data to help scientists monitor the health of the oceans.

Developed by Dr. Andrew Stern, executive director of Lost Bird, and Benjamin Thompson of BoardFormula (a surf-tech company), the fin is embedded with an array of sensors able to monitor specifics including water temperature, pH, and wave characteristics. The fin can be attached to existing surfboards, and the system will automatically activate and begin gathering data when it detects movement. After the surfing session, the user upload the data to the cloud for the scientists to access.
