Smartphone Device Listens for Heart Failure

Smartphone Device Listens for Heart Failure
Nov-30-18
A new smartphone device able to detect congestive heart failure by listening to the lungs could let people check their heart health at home.

Developed by teams from Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Nanyang Technological University, the prototype device resembles a standard stethoscope—and works much in the same way. When a person begins to feel breathless, which is one of the signs of excess fluid in the lungs, they can simply place the device on their chest and allow it to listen to their lungs for about ten seconds. That audio is then transmitted to an app and on to the cloud, where a remote server algorithm will process the data and determine the patient’s risk of congestive heart failure.

In tests, the system proved to be 92 percent as accurate as the ‘gold standard’ diagnosis methods.
