Software System Detects Distracted Driving

Software System Detects Distracted Driving
Sep-10-17
A new software system able to detect the signs of texting while driving could alert drivers to potentially dangerous activities.

The system, from a team at the University of Waterloo, relies on cameras installed in the vehicle that monitor and record unusual hand motions. That information is processed by a computer algorithm to determine what sorts of activities the driver was performing, which then allows the driver to be assigned a grade based on their level of safety threat.

According to the team, the system could one day be incorporated into self-driving cars, enabling the car to warn the driver or even take over if the driver’s actions are deemed too reckless.

Could these Sep-10-17 innovations be widened for old and sick people as well as for risky work tasks and hobbies? When unusual behavior is noticed, alarms on different levels are first given to the user and if those are not set off to relatives or PSAP.
