A new solar powered oxygen concentrator could help save lives in remote and off-the-grid regions.
Developed by Michael Hawkes, an assistant professor at the University of Alberta, the system was created to help treat children suffering from pneumonia in remote hospitals where electricity is unreliable. Since oxygen cylinders can be hard to come by, Hawkes and his team developed a solar system that powers an oxygen concentrator as it draws oxygen from the air. The system also charges the batteries that allow the concentrator to run at night.
