Sony's New In-Camera Polarizer

Sony's New In-Camera Polarizer
Dec-27-16
Sony’s is developing a polarization sensor that can be embedded directly inside the camera, eliminating the need for external filters.

Polarizing filters, which are used to reduce glare and reflections, have conventionally been placed in front of the lens due to the costs and complexity associated with creating an internal version. However, the new backside-illuminated prototype CMOS sensor from Sony could eliminate the need for an external filter.

The Sony sensor is made up of a metal grid that has been angled to four different polarization angles. The grid sits atop the camera’s photodiode, and the varying angles allow the photographer to choose the degree of polarization desired. The Sony team hopes the technology will soon find its way into consumer cameras.
