Spark of Light Lamp Powered by Bacteria

Spark of Light Lamp Powered by Bacteria
Nov-07-16
The bacteria-powered Spark of Light lamp requires no batteries—only a thriving colony of bioluminescent bacteria.

Created by Teresa van Dongen as an evolution of her earlier work, the Spark of Light lamp is equipped with four chambers that hold the bacteria in liquid. An electrode in each chamber captures the natural electric currents produced by the healthy bacteria, which is enough to power the lamp’s LEDs.

Although the lamp needs no batteries or external power, the bacteria do need to be fed a bit of acetate every two weeks, and the vessels should be cleaned a few times during the year.
