Spinning Sails Find New Life on Modern Tankers

Spinning Sails Find New Life on Modern Tankers
Mar-16-17
Norsepower has pulled from a hundred-year-old idea to install energy saving spinning sails on cargo ships.

First developed in 1926 by Anton Flettner, the ‘spinning sails’ consist of rotating columns that are spun by the air to create a thrust perpendicular to the direction of the wind. To bring the technology into the present century, the Norsepower team joined with Maersk and Shell to install the devices on their tanker ships. Although the prototype ships are still in development, the group expects to save up to 10 percent on fuel consumption, on average.
