SRL Robot Adds an Extra Pair of Hands

SRL Robot Adds an Extra Pair of Hands
Jun-06-14
The SRL shoulder-mounted robot arms are designed to give you a helping hand, reaching above your head or in front of you to hold an object in place.

Developed by a team at MIT, the robotic limbs are designed to augment existing limbs rather than replace missing ones. The team recently presented two of their prototypes at the IEEE Conference in Hong Kong: one designed with arms that extend from the shoulder and one with arms extending from the waist.

The SRL arms are able to operate somewhat automatically by monitoring a pair of inertial measurement units (IMUs) worn on the use's wrists and one attached to the shoulder mount. By analyzing the gyro and accelerometer data from the IMUs, the unit is able to coordinate its actions to be of the most use, such as holding an object overhead or opening a door.
