Steering Objects with Sound Waves

Steering Objects with Sound Waves
Jan-02-14
Researchers have developed a way to levitate and move objects in three directions using sound waves.

Scientists have been experimenting with acoustic levitation for some time, but until now they had only been able to move particles up and down along a fixed axis. In the new technology, developed by a team from the University of Tokyo, four phased arrays (speakers) are arranged in a square pointing inward, creating an "ultrasonic focal point." The opposing waves are able to suspend objects in the air, and altering the waves allows the object to be steered in three directions.
