The SteriFre desktop-sized cold plasma machine is able to sterilize a cell phone in minutes, without damaging the device—and could offer a new way to sterilize biomedical devices.
Developed by a team from Weill Cornell Medicine, the SteriFre offers an alternative to typical hot plasma, which can destroy the object in the process of sterilization. Instead, the SteriFre uses cold plasma, which is as effective and less damaging. Led by Dr. Czeslaw Golkowski, the team created a device capable of generating cold plasma and small enough to be used in a clinical setting. To test the device, the team placed various smartphones inside and subjected them to either five or ten minutes of cold plasma treatment. Afterwards, the team found that the phones treated for ten minutes were 100 percent free of pathogens, while the phone itself remained undamaged.
