Student-Designed Germ-Killing Door Handle

Student-Designed Germ-Killing Door Handle
Jul-02-15
A self-sanitizing door handle powered by kinetic movement could offer a foolproof way to help slow the spread of germs.

Created by a pair of teens from Tuen Mun, China, one bracket of the clear glass door handle is embedded with a UV light, and the entire handle itself is coated with a layer of titanium dioxide. The titanium dioxide increases the germ-killing power of the UV LED, which is powered by a generator that harnesses the door’s movement each time it opens or closes. In tests, the UV-equipped door handle was able to kill about 99.8 percent of the germs it came in contact with.

They are from Hong Kong, not China. Plus, Tuen Mun is located in the New Territories, one of the three main regions of Hong Kong, alongside Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. Also see the original source https://student.societyforscience.org/article/door-handle-kills-germs
